In the 1500's, Holland broke free from Spain and the catholic church and there was a period of religious freedom and un-hindered scientific research. People of many faiths fled to Holland so they could practice their faith without being persecuted, and likewise people went to Holland so they could practice scient without being persecuted. The pilgrims, as you know originally went to Holland but felt that their kids were becoming too liberal or some shit.
Some of the most important discoveries used as building blocks of modern science happened in this time because people weren't afraid to explore and record their findings. That thirst for knowledge which was as also at the heart of the ancient civilizations (who's vast library of knowledge was mostly destroyed in the name of religion long before the Renaissance) is also a part of human nature.
Sure we can say that it's human nature that is the problem with EVERYTHING. But if you want to break it down more, religion really has been used as a tool to keep us as a species from advancing further to our true potential.
