Lots of evidence out there in Poli Sci that politics are moved by politicians, not the reverse.

And by charismatic politicians specifically.

Shit was such a mess - and Obama was so insanely popular - in early 2009 that he could have led us just about anywhere that looked it might have an exit sign.

The Republicans have a lot of responsibility for what happened, but not as much as he does, imo. Obama chickened out on the fundamental economic issues - or, if you want to put it more positively, he decided to trade them for some meaningful changes to health insurance.

Or, most likely, as he writes in his book, he's just kind of a born again free marketeer, and not really a liberal or even much of a centrist at all. (Totally reject the idea that he's a pragmatic non-ideologue, btw. Very little evidence for that.)
