It's not even about austerity, it is about being realistic in the short- and long-term.

They have no population growth, they don't educate a huge percentage of their young, and want to give everyone crazy benefits.

Even in this economy, spending is OK if it is an investment that will lead to some kind of ROI. Infrastructure, education, etc...

But this seems to be an overreaction to the bad economy fueled by a nostalgic attachment to an outdated ideology and failing economic model.

Which is even more complicated due to a difference of opinion with Germany on what to do next and the presence of so many freeloaders in the EU.

I guess we will see. At least the people stood up for themselves.
