The government is going to get its marching orders from someone, whether it's the people at large or a select group of far richer and more powerful people. Right now it's overwhelmingly the latter group.
And a large chunk of the people at large have become convinced that taxes to pay for things are somehow evil and, well, you get what you pay for.
The mere fact that you refer to "the government" as "they" shows how effective the propaganda is. Education funding comes from a combination of federal and state and local sources and the mix varies from state to state. It's not some monolithic system. And really, it's "we," not "they," although some of "us" get a whole lot more say in how things go than most. But if we don't take ownership of the problem, we won't have a shot at fixing it.
