It makes no sense to say "the hurricanes were really bad, but it's been okay for a few years, so no global warming." These issues are analyzed over decade long horizons.

Of course, we can point to extreme events as being indicative of the trend... for instance, the March heat records in the US... but in a vacuum those things don't mean anything. It's in the broader context that they are significant.

The true counter to an extreme event indicating global warming, would be a trend of extreme events in the other direction. For instance, particularly calm years. But you can't provide that.
