Spending all your time driving the original roads, since the fancy new ones could never turn a profit.

There were already roads across the country, why build ones that made it a bit easier and faster to get around, if there's no direct profit to be made?
Seems like a pretty direct comparison with high speed rail.
Better argument would be that not enough people will use the high speed rail to justify the costs because they're trying to make it pay for itself, and thus will price the tickets too high. As opposed to the Interstate Highway System, which guaranteed itself a high volume of traffic because it was free to use...
