Alien life would have developed in radically different directions than terrestrial life. Things we take for granted like bilateral symmetry, the 5 senses, gender division, verbal and visual communication, base 10 mathematics, etc would almost certainly not be the same with a truly alien life form.
In fact, what they are would be a perfect example of an unknown unknown as we do not even know enough to speculate as to what they'd be like.
Try communicating the concept of "blue" to a person born without sight and you might just begin to appreciate the likely hurdle we'd have understanding a completely alien intelligence.
