Since their supporters tend to be, shall we say, excitable.

And about Gingrich, probably both factors you mentioned come into play. But again, turnout may be a factor.

Turnout was well down from 2008 in NH, Iowa and Florida, all places where Gingrich did badly.
The one state where turnout was up was in South Carolina, where he romped.

So, um, Ok, I'm not sure what it means.
