But musically, looking back on the 90's now, what really happened then? There was a lot of innovation in the 80's - most was cheesy of course - but what innovations were there in the 90's?

Grunge, rap-rock. Uhhh.

I like a lot of groups and individual songs in the 90s but it seems like unlike the 50s-60s, 60s-70s, and 70s-80s transitions, you could drop many of the best songs from the 80s into the 90s and they'd still be hits.

Listen to ads these days, they'll play clips from 80's songs (and 70s and even some 60s) with no sense of irony or nostalgia, as it would if you had played a 50s song in the 70s.
