I think most of the marketing is directed at the teenage demographic, so producers believe special effects are more important than nuanced story telling. most of the time, it buys them profit.
For grown ups, well, at least we have Quentin Tarantino, haha. His movies' trailers feel like parodies of mainstream Hollywood attractions. Except for the fact that the movies never actually digress into cheesiness. Inglorious Basterds was one of the best movies I've ever seen in a theatre... But if you ask the average fellow, he was bored by the slowness and lack of action. Just ridiculous.
