The Irish & Irish-American communities have a proud history of overcoming centuries of oppression & persecution to finally become "mainstream" non-victims, both in the US (epitomized by the election of John F. Kennedy as US President) and in Europe (exemplified by the fact that the Republic of Ireland, which got autonomy from Britain only in 1921, is now one of the most prosperous & successful countries in Europe).
It's a good and uplifting story, one worth remembering and celebrating on March 17.
It's infuriating to me that our community's past leaders chose to "spin" St. Patrick's day as a day of booze & leprauchins.
