forgot Casey Jacobsen... who I believe was recruited by schools like Duke... but for the most part Cal's players were heavily recruited and Stanfords were probably not too heavily recruited.

Doesn't really have anything to do with the coaches or the programs. If anything you can make the case that Monty can win with lesser talent... which probably doesn't work in the NBA.
