No, that's not "just the way it goes." In sports, people usually are held accountable if their team doesn't win. Managers, coaches, and gms from all leagues have been fired for not being able to take their team to the next level.
Now, we don't think Beane should be fired. But he never gets any criticism. He's a messiah for A's fans. People have complete faith in him on whatever he does, when the reality is he's less likely to put together a world series contender than sabean. Just the long and the short of it.
Do you really think Beane will give any of their young prospects contracts when they hit their prime? of course not. And do you really think a team can win a world series with a bunch of young players and fading veterans? So unlikely.
Sorry, the A's aa flawed team/franchise/product. A's fans blame the owner. Beane should shoulder much of that blame. after all, he is part owner.
